Now an emeritus professor at Anderson University in South Carolina, I have become something of a specialist in Carl Sandburg. Since the mid-1980s, when I was full time professor, I have done Elderhostels and Lifelong Learning Institute courses on Sandburg. Living sixty-odd miles from Flat Rock, I visit the home at every opportunity. There's always more to learn about this fascinating and complex writer. My wife and I saw the film the other night (July 26) at the Flat Rock Playhouse, and we both learned more about CS. I thought (and hope) one inescapable aspect of the film was the man's great social concern. I like to describe that aspect of him as one who wrote for and about the down-to-earth and down-and-out.
